Tooth Tips for Later Life

How to Use a Little-Known Method to Floss Your Teeth More Effectively

When you visit your dentist, he or she will tell you that it is equally as important to floss each day, as it is to brush your teeth. Yet the retail industry seems to forget this, as you will often see a dizzying array of tooth brushes and toothpaste on a shop shelf, but not a lot of options when it comes to flossing materials. As these are both vital to your oral health, why should you overlook this option, and what can you do to make it a little easier, if you struggle with technique?

A Brush Only Goes So Far

The scientists have been very careful to design the tooth brush, so that it's extremely effective at getting to those difficult to reach places and dislodging tough food particles. Still, the brush can never get all the way in between your teeth and you'll need to, because if not plaque can be left to build up here, unchallenged.

Why Is It So Difficult?

While you may have a good idea how to floss, you may still find it a rather finicky operation. It can be challenging to grab hold of both ends of the floss correctly and you feel that you have to wrap it so securely around the end of your fingers, that you sometimes cut off the circulation. Once you've done that, it's very difficult to manoeuvre the floss in between the teeth effectively.

A Much Easier Way

Here is a different way to approach it. Pull a good length of floss out of the canister and then tie each end together so that it forms a natural circle. Take hold of this circle at the 2 o'clock and 10 o'clock position (as if you were holding a steering wheel in a car) and this will make it a lot easier to slide a portion of it in between the teeth.

Now, you can move it back and forth carefully and gently, avoiding the actual gums themselves if they are sensitive. As you go, move your fingers slightly, so that you get a fresh piece of floss to use in between each new pair of teeth.

Never Look Back

Isn't this a lot easier? Now, you have no excuse for not doing this on a daily basis, as you know how important it is for your long-term future health. Tell all your friends about your new and improved method. You're guaranteed to get a seal of approval from a family dental services office!
